Updating Your South Jersey Will, Power of Attorney & Healthcare Directive After Divorce

After finalizing your divorce, there are important steps to take to protect your future. Updating your estate planning documents is one of the most important and most overlooked steps after a divorce.

Why This Matters

New Jersey law automatically revokes most provisions in a will that benefit a former spouse. However, beneficiary designations on life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and payable-on-death accounts do not automatically change. If you don’t update these designations, your ex-spouse could still inherit significant assets — regardless of what your divorce judgment says.
