Modifying a Child Support Order in South Jersey

Sometimes circumstances change after a child support is entered. When they do, New Jersey law allows either parent to request a modification —but only if the change is significant enough to warrant court intervention.

When Can Child Support Be Modified?

To modify a child support order, you must demonstrate a substantial change in circumstances since the order was entered. Common examples include:

Job loss or significant decrease in income
Substantial increase in income (either parent)
Changes in parenting time arrangements
Increased needs of the child (medical, educational, special needs)
Changes in childcare or health insurance costs
Emancipation of a child

The court will recalculate support using the New Jersey Child Support Guidelines based on the new circumstances.
