There is no doubt that divorce is one of the most difficult experiences many people go through.

Considering the incredible toll a divorce can take on a person, it is critical that you try to prioritize your health and well-being during the process. If you don’t, you could wind up suffering more and having a harder time getting back on your feet. Below are some ways you can protect yourself.

Be mindful of alcohol and other substance use

Recent research suggests that alcohol use after divorce increases substantially. In fact, the study found that diagnoses for alcohol use disorders increased sixfold for divorced men and sevenfold for divorced women.

To avoid this, be mindful of drinking habits and seek help if you think you might be struggling with an addiction.

Reach out for support

Divorce can be an isolating experience. You might feel embarrassed or unsure of which friends you can trust.

However, rather than turn inward and internalize everything, it could be better to reach outward for support instead. Of course, this includes family and friends, but you might also consider talking to a counselor or joining a new group in your community; you could try volunteering or spending time with acquaintances at work in an effort to build new relationships outside of the ones you had during your marriage.

Instead, consider taking up or keeping healthy habits and behaviors. Working out, cooking, reading, spending time with friends and learning a new skill or language could be good ways to alleviate some of your stress and help you stay focused on something other than a divorce.
